Enhancing Nursing Role and Competency in Advance Care Planning
The specific goals are to: define the roles of nurses in Advanced Care Planning (ACP); plan and implement educational interventions to enhance nurses' competencies to fulfill their role in ACP; and build a system to support and integrate ACP into standard care. The project deliverable will be a toolkit to optimize nurses’ ability to assist patients and their families in having meaningful ACP conversations.
My goal is to become a palliative care researcher whose work contributes to improving care for patients and families facing serious illness. I started my career as a nurse working in a hospital in Japan where many patients died without having the opportunity to make their own end-of-life care decisions and without adequate symptom management to maintain quality of life. Good end-of-life care does not mean the same thing for each person and their loved ones. As healthcare professionals, we need to strive to provide good end-of-life care for each individual. I am committed to exploring patient-centered end-of-life care and to identifying and implementing methods to provide tailored care that respects the individual’s life.
