Palliative Care Specialty Spiritual Care Education
To develop, pilot and evaluate a replicable palliative care specialty spiritual care education program at the UC San Diego Health Doris A. Howell Palliative Care Service. The program will blend best practices for teaching spiritual care from clinical pastoral education and palliative care in the rich learning environment of UC San Diego Health. It will entail didactic education, spiritual reflection and clinically-based training.
“I look forward to making use of my experience, credentials and energy to work with a talented interdisciplinary team in multiple specialties and inpatient and outpatient settings to develop a robust spiritual care and spiritual care education program that fits and enhances palliative care. This award would be a major step in advancing my vision for palliative care. There has been talk in professional spiritual care and education organizations in recent years about establishing more sustainable positions for chaplains paralleling academic medicine positions that protect time and prioritize training, research and clinical work. I am very excited about the possibility of having protected time to develop and disseminate curriculum and to present my findings and collaborate with spiritual care and palliative care learners and leaders on local and national levels.”
