The emergency department- A safety net model for palliative care
This project uses the participatory co-design methodology 'Experience-based Co-design' (EBCD). Using the EBCD approach, this project will identify the palliative care delivery preferences and needs of palliative patients, family caregivers and emergency department clinicians in the emergency department (ED). These data will inform development, evaluation, and system-wide rollout of a patient-centered ED-palliative care toolkit.
“The future of palliative care must have the patient-family voice embedded within program and service development. ED-palliative care must go beyond understanding experiences or encouraging palliative care referrals, to implementing systems-wide change focused on patient-centered models. I believe these systems changes and focus on patient-centered and co-designed outcomes will inform the safest and strongest future of palliative care provision in the ED. Throughout my career trajectory I will work in service to support this approach, demonstrating on increasingly larger scales how and where patients, families and providers can collaborate in service co-design that results in high quality, patient-centered palliative care in the ED.”
