“I see palliative care continuing to grow as a specialty, moving beyond some of the regulatory restrictions that have previously defined the boundaries of care for the seriously ill. My vision is one that supports palliative care earlier in a patient’s care trajectory, but also concurrent hospice care that serves patients with the fully supported and funded interdisciplinary care that sets it apart from other specialty care delivery models. Nurses and community-based agencies have both been leaders in the development of hospice and palliative care in the United States and will continue to do so with innovative approaches to providing holistic care to those with serious illness. I envision my career as a leader both locally and nationally in developing the palliative nursing workforce through both innovative workforce programs in existing community agencies as well as academic-community agency collaboration. As the population with serious illness grows, expertise and leadership in these two areas will be critical for ensuring the provision of high quality care for persons with serious illness."
