Addressing the Palliative Nursing Workforce Gap: A Hospice Nurse Residency Program
The Hospice Nurse Residency project aims to expand a successful, local, pilot program to a national model for improving the quality and sustainability of the hospice and palliative care nursing workforce. Aligned with leadership goals of becoming a national leader in addressing palliative nursing workforce challenges, this project addresses the gap between nursing education and practice for new graduate and experienced registered nurses wanting to begin a career in this specialty field. Prioritizing the hospice and palliative care nurse workforce is paramount to the success of countless initiatives aimed at providing optimal, evidence-based care for those with serious illness in the future.
“I see palliative care continuing to grow as a specialty, moving beyond some of the regulatory restrictions that have previously defined the boundaries of care for the seriously ill. My vision is one that supports palliative care earlier in a patient’s care trajectory, but also concurrent hospice care that serves patients with the fully supported and funded interdisciplinary care that sets it apart from other specialty care delivery models. Nurses and community-based agencies have both been leaders in the development of hospice and palliative care in the United States and will continue to do so with innovative approaches to providing holistic care to those with serious illness. I envision my career as a leader both locally and nationally in developing the palliative nursing workforce through both innovative workforce programs in existing community agencies as well as academic-community agency collaboration. As the population with serious illness grows, expertise and leadership in these two areas will be critical for ensuring the provision of high quality care for persons with serious illness."
