Applications are open for Cambia Health Foundation’s 2017 Sojourns Scholar Leadership Program. The annual initiative identifies up to 10 outstanding palliative care physicians and nurses, and awards each an $180,000 grant over two years to support a vigorous leadership development plan and an innovative research, clinical, educational or policy project. To further broaden learning and development opportunities, each Sojourns Scholar is mentored by an established national palliative care leader from the program’s advisory council:

Application and Eligibility
With just one palliative care medical professional per 1,200 people facing serious illness in the United States, there are tremendous gaps in person-focused care. To address this widening disparity, Cambia Health Foundation launched this unique program in 2014, with the goal of continually advancing capacity, leadership and innovation in the field of palliative care.
“The mentoring, training and forging creative connections with national colleagues provide a platform for impacting the field of palliative care on national and global levels,” said 2015 Sojourns Scholar Deborah Lafond, DNP, Children’s National Health System, Washington, D.C.
“This program has been an absolute game-changer for me – an invaluable opportunity to collaborate with and learn from world-class leaders in palliative care,” said 2014 Sojourns Scholar Anne Kinderman, MD, San Francisco General Hospital at UCSF.
While this palliative care leadership and workforce development program enters its third year, it is actually part of a nine-year focus on palliative care by the Foundation to date. Since 2007, Cambia Health Foundation has invested more than $30 million to help advance all five key recommendation areas outlined in the landmark “Dying in America” report.

- Each Sojourns Scholar will be awarded a two-year grant of $90,000 per year to support an individualized leadership development plan and to carry out a clinical, research, educational, policy or advocacy project.
